“Klagetoh” is anglicized from the Navajo phrase name “Leeyi’ to” meaning “water underneath ground”. The original well, after which the community was named, is now not functional. It is located an eighth of a mile east of the Klagetoh Express. The community is situated slightly south and mid-central to the chapter exterior boundaries. Several sub-areas of the community have Navajo place names are also identified by local residents. The chapter was recognized by the BIA in the later part of the first half of the 20th Century. It was certified as a Navajo chapter on October 26, 1955 by the Navajo Tribal Council to qualify for reimbursing and paying stipends to locally elected officers. The certification also qualified the chapter to upgrade its meeting hall; with the original chapter house being built in 1963.
Klagetoh Chapter holds meetings monthly in order to keep the Klagetoh chapter residents informed and have a forum in which to express their opinions to their Navajo Council delegates or decide on the matters concerning their chapter.
The Chapter was awarded funding through the Navajo Nation for installation of photoelectric solar cell units for 150 isolated homes, the project took three months to complete around 1991. Additional tribal funding allowed for the construction of a power line extension to 14 homes, twenty NHA housing units. A recreation center is proposed for development in 2003. A water line extension was completed in 1991.
The Klagetoh Chapter House is located on State Highway 191, 15 miles south of Ganado, AZ. We are located directly behind the fire station.
